MODESTO MANIAX
Defensive Coach
Q & A with Tony Cotta
@modestomaniax.com.

(MM)Welcome Coach:

(TC)Thanks for having me.

(MM)In addition to being a High school and college standout, you are a successful High School football coach with time spent at the prestigious Central catholic in Modesto. You've seen Football...  One week has passed and you have gotten to see your first look at this years Maniax Squad. How is Women’s Tackle Football different than boy’s football?

(TC)The way the women respond, is way different than high school kids for sure, you can tell ‘em one thing, you can tell ’em one time, and they do it.  High school males, just seem to, have to have things taught, repeated and frequently.  That is a major surprise for me and a huge positive out here.    To me it’s amazing with 15 years experience at the high school level, where I would have to explain over and over, to young men and use up half the practice, something that they should get the first time.  Tell these girls one time, and they do it, and I find that utterly amazing.

(MM)What would you say to the critics that might think this is a lingerie bowl or roller derby or the like.

(TC)Tell them to come see it!  Tell them its the real deal!  I was telling a group of former coaches and players last night at a benefit fundraiser for Mick Founts.

(*Editor Note*VOTE Mick Founts for San Joaquin County Superintendent in 2010)

I was talking to generations of Manteca High School Coaches, I answered the funny looks with, you need to come and check it out for yourselves, see for themselves, that this is real, not fake, not the lingerie bowl..  Real Pro Tackle Football.  I don’t watch the lingerie bowl..

(MM) Had you ever heard of the sport, Women’s Tackle football before talking to coach Watson, late last year.

(TC) I had never heard of it…

(MM) Do you follow women’s sports?

(TC)Maybe some college hoops or track and field

(MM) The Maniax opener this year on April 3rd, will be against Corvallis.  After seeing last year’s video.  What did you see from Corvallis, and what will be the plan for the Maniax against this type of football.

(TC) Our goal will be to execute, Play hard, and goto the whistle.  Basically to be better than we were last year, and not let them run the ball down our throats, up and down the field.  We WILL be competitive.  The Corvallis team is big, they can move, they can play.

(MM) What Did You Think Of That style of football?

(TC) That’s like the Notre Dame 4 horsemen style of play, hand the ball off and create a pile.  I have never seen it or coached against it.. I have seen it in old black and white, grainy films, that's it.  Old Notre Dame Film.

(MM) It’s an easy read at practice, to see the years of “same-team” rivalry that you and coach watson have. That offense- defense thing.. Coach Cotta from the other side of the ball, As a defensive coach, during Hell Week, what did you see from the Maniax on offense, beings you have never seen it close up b4?

(TC) I think we are way ahead of the game from last year  From game to
practice video, you can see it.  To be able to throw the ball the way we do, and to have, not that many teams in the league that can do this as effectively as we will be doing by March, is a mindblower.  I have heard this is a running league. If that is the case, it will be hard for people to defend our style, which can be explosive, quickly. That reason being, they aren’t practicing against it..  You practice against what you have. That is a plus right from the start.

(MM) In addition to practicing against the run, the throw is virtually non-existent in the IWFL, and beings we’ll be able to practice defense on an offense like ours, our defense will be fully versed in defending our style of play, what else will you teach em?

(TC) Schemes..  I’ll be implementing some schemes, and scheme systems.  We’ll work on the fundamentals, teaching the girls the basics, the fundamentals. That’s the key to any kind of scheme, play or game plan.  They’ll need to perform at maximum level. That’s how I was coached and taught and that’s what I intend on teaching these ladies.

(MM) What would you like to tell the fans of the Maniax about our new season.

(TC) These girls will execute with passion, they will be more competive than last year, they will also bring a higher energy level, they will not disappoint our fans.. Look at me. Practice just ended, and I’m wearing this on my face.. (beaming)
